The meetings of the organizations committed to dance and operating in Campania started in January 2001 and completed in May 2004 have highlighted some of the problems relating to our field:

- The decrease in the number of clients both in terms of students attending dance schools and in terms of spectators attending performances by Companies and Dance Groups;
- The difficulty in finding professional employment both for dancers and choreographers and, to a smaller extent, also for teachers
- The difficulty in gathering information useful for the development of one's own activity (reference to norms; national and EU regulations, application for projects);
- The difficulty in establishing fruitful links with local and national institutions;
- The difficulty in recognising ourselves as belonging to a professional category and therefore in projecting this kind of image in relating to external bodies;
- The difficulty in establishing relationships with structures belonging to the same regional area;
- The need to include dance education in the curriculum of compulsory schooling
- The need to establish contact with similar structures operating in the national and regional area
- The need to know how some problems affecting our sector have been solved in other Italian regions;
- The development of project (conventions, shows, specific actions) that can help increase the number of clients of dance;
- The coordination of projects carried out in the region;
- The development of dance not simply as a practical art but as art and culture;
- The promotion and development of professional training;
- The promotion and development of an audience specifically for dance events

Although we are aware that the problems mentioned are not new to any of us, during the meetings we have tried to give some suggestions and some warning signals that could in the end be useful for all of us.

The starting points already identified to start solving the numerous problems are up to now just a few and quite simple:

- e-mail address to send and receive information in real time, to spread and make known on the territory the various initiatives;

- Web site to make our activity more tangible, to connect and to know similar structures and initiatives;

- Monitoring of all the Campania area through the distribution of a questionnaire to know more about dance events organised in our region;

- Data bank of the dance operators and networking of all the information gathered from the questionnaire in order to become a presence at national and European level and to encourage new work links;

- Daily collaboration between the structures and the teaching centres to solve all the small problems that make our job more complicated and tiring every day;

- A less pessimistic, sceptical and expectation attitude

- A less selective attitude

- Meeting in September/October 2001 to analyse the lack of links between those who are practically committed to dance through their schools and teaching centres, those who see dance as both art and culture and those who are committed to live dance performances. Teachers, choreographers and experts operating at national level will be invited.

These first meetings involving the organisations committed to dance operating in Campania do not and cannot bring us to any final conclusion because we hope that the debate can even involve more people, that those who work in this field can really collaborate on the net. We hope we can have more of these meetings to be held all over the region and that we can find a solution for us all to coexist and to develop the sector and increase the number of our clients.
